Artist Statement

For me, art is an escape where I can express myself creatively. I love interacting with a variety of media. Most notably I use marker or paint, such as acrylic or oil, but I have experimented in ceramics, silkscreen, block printing, woodwork, metals, paper craft, graphite, charcoal, ink, crayons, and oil pastel. I love to explore how these mediums can interact and react to each other in order to convey certain feelings or aesthetic desires. I normally pick mediums that give off certain feelings when they are viewed or the feelings that are invoked when I am using them.

For instance, when I use oil paint to detail texture such as fur or hair, I love to push the paint to make such details. I typically use this medium when I want to create a special work of art and/or want to express a deep feeling that has been bottled up. I almost always play with color in my paintings to express the feelings either I have toward a subject and or how I perceive others may feel about a particular topic.

While my woodworking skills may be considered basic at best, I use all I have at my disposal. I use these works almost exclusively for friends and family and adorn them with outside items at times, in an almost assemblage fashion. The wood projects are almost always painted in some regard, whether acrylic or through spray paint. I mainly make these works to represent the person I plan on giving it to and tend to give it features the person may like.

That being said, my ceramic works are made to invoke curiosity and playfulness. These works involve texture, color, and form. My art tends to invoke touch, mainly through its roughness in some areas and/or smoothness in others. This can be accomplished through my expressionistic approach to the clay, which is to say that I enjoy creating unique texture by playing with tools to make impressions or to smooth out areas in my work. I also I enjoy playing with different glazes to see what effects they may have on my art.

In summary, I mainly make my art to please the senses, these senses can be mine or others. I mainly accomplish this through implied texture but will also use physical texture when applicable. I also tend to use color to create a feeling and personality in my work.
